TIM PLETTER: I’ve been practicing law for about 15 years, right here in Stratford, Connecticut. Most of my clients are having financial problems. Many need to file bankruptcy. Many are in foreclosure. Some of them are being sued. And we try and solve whatever problems they’re having.

Chapter 7 is for people who have unsecured debt, such as credit cards and medical bills. It allows them to try and eliminate their debt if they qualify. Chapter 13 allows people primarily who are in foreclosure to try and get caught up on their mortgage and stop the foreclosure, save a home.

As soon as a client calls to make an appointment, we make it clear that the initial meeting with me is free of any charge. Bankruptcy is scary and at times complicated. And when people come in to talk to me, one of the first steps is to discuss bankruptcy in a way that maybe is less scary and make them understand that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that there is a solution to their problem. And by the time we’re done with our representation, things will be better, and that it’s not the end of the world but the beginning of a new world.
